SP Technical Research Institute assists TfL in bus fire suppression systems
02 July 2012
www.chinabuses.org: Transport for London (TfL) has commissioned SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden (SP) to study the effectiveness of bus fire suppression systems. There is currently a lack of information concerning the performance of bus fire suppression systems in real bus fires that have occurred in the TfL fleet. The proposed study will review all recent fire incidents in TfL buses with installed suppression systems. The results of this review will be reported back to TfL to help provide recommendations concerning updated system specification.
SP Fire Technology has been actively conducting research into bus fire safety since 2004, specifically supported by the Swedish and Norwegian Road Administrations. Since 2010 SP has developed a fire test standard for active fire suppression systems in bus engine compartments. An engine compartment mock-up has been built and used to examine the impact of various parameters. Recently SP has extended this work to include the development of a standard related to detection capabilities for different detection systems.
SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden is a wholly Government owned institute under the Ministry of Industry. SP is the national institute for technical evaluation, research, testing, certification, metrology and calibration, and is working closely with large and small companies, universities, institutes of technology and other organisations. SP has approximately1200 employees and an annual turnover of approximately 1200 million SEK. SP Fire Technology conducts research, testing and certification of products related to fire safety.
