The auto sector is an important pillar industry of the national economy, and it could significantly expand employment and boost spending, Zhang said to some auto industry executives and experts at the auto-parts exhibition.
He urged the promotion of mergers within the sector to cultivate big players, and asked auto makers to invest more on research to develop new models that are more energy-efficient or use alternative energies.
Zhang told auto-parts makers to improve competitiveness for a huge Chinese market that is expected to see 12 million autos come off production lines this year, which will bring the country's total number of autos up to 75 million.
