All-electric Buses Gains Popularity in China

Backed up by Ministry of Science and Technology and Beijing Municipal Government, an R&D team led by Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) independently rolled out 50 units of all-electric buses, which were put into 24/h non-stop operation near the Olympic venues at last year’s Beijing Olympics.

The operation of the green bus fleet, marking the first batch of high-energy lithium-ion fuel cell buses that has ever been used in the Olympic history, grabbed wide media attention in August, 2008.

One year later, the eco-friendly buses are gaining an increasing popularity and expanding their presence in Shanghai, Kunming, Jinan and other cities that are actively involved in pushing forward the trial operation of energy-saving and new energy vehicles.
It is reported that BIT has already signed an agreement with SAIC and will provide all-electric bus driveline platform, on which SAIC will build all-electric buses for 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
