Cities Across China to Celebrate Care-for-Bus-Drivers Day on May 20

11 May 2022

Bus drivers are essential in cities. To recognize their hard work and special contribution to society, Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province started celebrating Care-for-Bus-Drivers Day on May 20 in 2017. With the theme of Understanding and Respect, the event aims to promote understanding between passengers and bus drivers and call for more care for bus drivers from society.

The event quickly drew wide public and media attention. More and more cities have joined Zhenjiang to celebrate the special day for bus drivers. In 2018, all cities across Jiangsu started celebrating Care-for-Bus-Drivers Day on May 20. In 2020, over 100 bus operators joined the celebration. One year later, the number doubled, exceeding 200.

“Through celebrating the day, we hope more people could have a deeper understanding of bus drivers and their hard work. We also hope more bus drivers will full appreciate how essential their work is to our society”, said Ling Jianfeng, General Manager of Zhenjiang Public Transport.

Statistics show that 36 major cities across China provided public transportation services to 52.95 billion passengers in 2021, up by 19.9% year on year. The total number of passengers taking bus services reached 22.87 billion, accounting for nearly half of the total passenger flow in 2021.

At the 16th China Bus Influences Annual Review held in February, 2022, the organizing committee of the event once again called for more care for bus drivers. With more advanced technologies and new energy power drivelines, buses now create more comfortable working environment for bus drivers.

Currently, the total number of buses in operation across China has exceeded 700,000 units and the total number of bus drivers has exceeded one million. Thanks to their hard work, cities can function efficiently and people can flow smoothly.
