Shangchai Launches Series of New Engines
08 April 2013
www.cinabuses.org : Shangchai officially launched latest developed products at the annual bus exhibition, namely, the R series, H series and E series, which, along with the D series, are known as the four major product platforms of Shangchai. In the eyes of Qiu Guoping, deputy general engineer, a comprehensive product range and innovation are the most important factors driving Shangchai’s endeavor.
23 years ago, upon joining Shangchai, Qiu Guoping participated in the designing of D series of engine, which later became the most competitive product of Shangchai in the area of passenger bus. Qiu played an important role in the building of new product platforms. He introduced to reporter the key product- H series of engine: “this new generation of energy-saving engine was co-developed with Ricardo institute of the UK, for the demand of China’s commercial vehicle market. It meets the standards of China IV and China V with the power ranges between 120 and 260 hp. Also, the engine gathered the advanced technologies of four-valve, light-weight design, simple structuring, high-reliability, energy-saving and more. It tops all competitors with same power and same displacement in weight and volume, making it more suitable for installation and maintenance for a wider range of buses.”
Previously, 8-9 L engines of Shangchai were widely welcomed, even though with a short range of products, housing power between 160 and 320 hp. Bus makers, for a better management, did not wish to use engines of different brands, so, Shangchai did not occupy a sizable market share for this reason.
After becoming a member of SAIC, Shangchai successively launched the R series (2.5/2.8 L), H series (4.3/ 6.5 L), D series (5.3/ 8.3/ 8.8 L), E series (10.4/ 11.8 L) products, with power ranging between 70 and 480 hp, which could fully meet the demands of domestic and foreign customers. Those products featured the consistent merits of reliability, high value of Shangchai, also, made full preparation for needs of CNG and LNG markets.
Shangchai company limited was originally the Shanghai Diesel Engine Factory, founded in 1947, a pioneer in the diesel engine industry in China. In the early period of the development of auto industry of new China, Shangchai developed a number of diesel engines which marked “first” for many times in new China. However, in the latter half of the 1990s, Shangchai missed the developing opportunity. And situation turned for better after it became a member of SAIC.
“Shangchai saw great difference happened in the past 20 years by bravely developing new products,” Qiu said to reporter of www.chinabuses.org. With strong support of SAIC, Shangchai broadened her vision, and keeps innovating, aiming to expand market shares.
Following the trend of emission-reduction and energy-saving, along with an immature new energy industry, it seems clean energy cars are the inevitable choice for public transportation. And natural gas engine has always been an advantage of Shangchai. According to an unofficial survey, the D series engine takes up 40% of domestic market. CNG and LNG engines develop hand in hand, adopting more advanced technologies, aiming to fit a wider range of usage.
A comprehensive range of product as well as the sense of opening is the decisive factors for a manufacturing company to survive the market. And Shangchai is in possession of both of them. So, greater success is expected of Shangchai.
