FPT: Advanced Products for New Regulations

15 March 2013

www.chinabuses.org : The daily life got greatly affected in the beginning of the year by the frequent appearance of haze. Experts say the issue of air pollution is not unsolvable. By developing urban road system and public transportation, controlling car emission strictly, we could reach the level of advanced countries, where, on one hand, we could embrace the auto era, on the other hand, enjoy the blue sky.

We have more expectation towards the launching of the China IV Emission Standard for heavy-duty diesel engine. For those diesel engine makers in China market, do they have suitable products yet? Are they ready for the upcoming China IV emission standard? Reporter form www.chinabuses.com interviewed Mr. Qi Zhenggang, chief engineering director of FPT China.

Heavy duty diesel trucks emit a large quantity of nitric oxide and PM, which make it very important for China to control the emission of heavy duty diesel trucks. MEP issued A notice on the implementation of the national fourth stage car from compression ignition engine and vehicle pollutant emission standards, which regulates that, beginning form July 1st, 2013, all automotive pressure combustion engines and vehicles for production, importing, sales and registration must go meet the China IV standards.

When asked whether the products of FPT could reach the standards of China IV, Qi Zhenggang responded: “ facing the problem of global energy shortage and pollution, it is a long term strategy for China auto industry to develop sustainably, and develop energy saving technologies and cars. FPT has the advantage in emission technologies. Now, the whole series of engines reached the Euro V standards, some of the products reach Euro VI, and the domestically made engines meet the requirement of China IV standards.

Take the Cursor engine for example, which is quite familiar to the Chinese customers, it is euipped with 6 cylinders, 4 valves, VGT turbo charging, inter cooling, common rail technologies. Cursor meet the standards of Euro III, and could be modified for Euro IV , Euro V or Euro VI, which has been used in bus companies for many years in Europe and South America. The Cursor 13, which was designed following the Euro VI standards, used exhaust driven supercharger, to achieve the perfect combination of performance, economic efficiency and environmental protection. The Cursor 13 fit perfectly on new Genlyon trucks.

Surpassing China IV standards with SCR technology

As emission standards in many countries are getting ever stricter, plus, the requirement for low oil-consumption cars is increasing among consumers, major engine makers are doing their best developing new technologies that help lowering emissions. Qi Zhenggang told the reporter that : “ in FPT, technological advantage and innovation served not only the decisive factor in boosting the development of the company, but also serves as a major strategy of the company.”

After treatment is a necessity to fulfill the China IV standard because the cylinder combustion produces nitric oxide and PM. Technically, SCR could guarantee the best efficiency of engines; EGR lowered the peak temperature and the emission of nitric oxide, while, restricting the performance of the engine. FPT is dedicated to meeting the new emission standards, and reduce the impact on the vehicle body and the possible increase in costs as a result. To do that, FPT created a whole new technology pattern and SCR is the only solution for Euro IV.” said Qi Zhenggang.

FPT improved the efficiency of engines to reduce PM. The leftover PM will be reduced by DPF, and NOx will be reduced by exhaust system, thus, reducing the oil consumption, meanwhile, improve the reliability. The SCR of FPT could reduce the emission of NOx by 95%. Since the Euro IV standards was introduced in 2005, FPT has offered SCR for more than 250,000 cras.

With the China IV standards approaching, the industry has grown better understanding of clean energy technology. And a batch of heavy duty diesel engine makers, with FPT as the representation, are making contribution to the construction of public transportation in urban China and environmet-protection, by developing better products.
