Trolleybuses can perfectly Replace Pure Electric Buses

31 July 2012

www.chinabuses.org: On July 18 2012, China International New Energy Vehicles Forum was successfully held in Heilongjiang Province. In the meeting, Professor Wang from Chongqing University of Communications presented its own view on the development about new energy buses.

Professor Wang referred that the large scale application of the pure electric buses is at a far distant date. He explained that the commercial electricity price of charging the buses are much higher than the family used electricity. Besides, the charging volume is also very big as well as the less developed battery technology etc factors that influence the wide-use of the pure electric buses.

When referring to hybrid buses, Professor Wang believed that even without China national policy encourage and support, the development of the hybrid buses are also have the condition to realize the commercial application on a large scale. However, there are still some problems in the development of the hybrid buses, such as according to the fuel efficiency theory, the fuel saving rate of the hybrid buses can reach at round 20%-30%, however, in the real operation, the fuel saving rate only reach around 5%.

Professor Wang believed that more choices of different types of buses, more ways to help to solve and develop of the new energy buses. Such as the trolleybus is a type of electric bus powered by two overhead electric wires. He believed that trolleybus is a perfect replacement for pure electric buses. Although their operations are less flexible than that of motor buses, trolley buses are more energy efficient, much quieter, and much less polluting. Modern trolley buses have an auxiliary power unit (APU), which allows the buses to travel off-wire for several blocks and avoid anything blocking their normal route, such as an excavation in the street or a street fair. The use of trolley buses is generally restricted to lines on which a high-enough frequency of service can justify the expense of the electric power system installation and vehicle costs.

At last, Professor Wang said that Chinese policy just make one goal to the public, which is to encourage people through the various methods to achieve this goal. The one who reaches the target, will be supported by the government.
