To accelerate the development of clean-energy automobiles, such as hybrid-powered and electricity-powered cars, can not only mitigate the problems concerning the shortage of petroleum resources, but also reduce the degree of pollution the auto industry causes for the environment. It is now the prevailing trend of the development of the global auto industry. Currently, some auto companies, both domestic and foreign ones, are speeding up the process of industrializing new-energy vehicles. Under such a background, SAIC Motor shall increase its awareness of urgency and crisis, accelerate structure adjustment, enhance innovation capability, and promote the industrialization of new-energy automobiles.

See the situation clearly and specify the target

Presently, energy shortage and environmental pollution are becoming the two major restraining elements for the development of the global auto industry. To accelerate the development of clean-energy automobiles, such as hybrid-powered and electricity-powered cars, can not only mitigate the problems concerning the shortage of petroleum resources, but also reduce the degree of pollution the auto industry causes for the environment. It is now the prevailing trend of the development of the global auto industry. Speaking from the prospects of SAIC Motor's development strategy, to recognize the demands of the market and develop new-energy vehicles that can meet such demands is the strategic choice for the confrontation of a new round of competition and for the realization of leapfrog development. It will help SAIC Motor in occupying advantageous positions in the new round of competition in the global auto market. 

For years, SAIC Motor has been taking part in the country's "863" energy-saving plan and new-energy automobile projects, through which it has developed many models of new-energy sedan cars and passenger car in the fuel-battery and hybrid powered auto projects. Through these endeavors it has obtained experience and established a development team for new-energy cars, laying a solid foundation for SAIC Motor in the development of new-energy automobiles. In order to accelerate the development of new-energy cars, SAIC Motor set up a new-energy car R&D and Industrialization department specifically for this reason, and marked out clearly the course of technology development in accordance with SAIC Motor's new-energy car development strategy: With the development trend of auto powering system being engine electrization and fuel diversification, SAIC Motor shall accelerate the industrialization of hybrid cars and electric cars while promote the R&D upgrade and demonstration running of fuel battery cars. 

SAIC Motor goes further in defining its goals in different phases of its development of new-energy cars: first, make sure to put the ROEWE 750, which is a mild hybrid powered product, into production by the year 2010. This model adopts BSG (belt-starter-generator) system, can perform all hybrid powered functions except for purely electric powering, and achieves an overall fuel saving rate of 20 percent; second, SAIC Motor and its subsidiary companies will provide the 2010 EXPO SHANGHAI with 4 categories and over 1000 units of new-energy cars for service within the Expo site; third, make sure to put the ROEWE 550 PLUG-IN, a full hybrid product, into production by the year 2012. This model has a cruising ability of over 500 km, achieving a fuel-saving rate of 50 percent; fourth, make sure to finish the engineering samples of purely electric power car by the year 2011, and actualize lot production in 2012; fifth, carry out the construction of an industrialization-oriented industry chain for new-energy car parts, so as to form industrial clusters.

Intensify our effort and initiate actions

Currently, whole-vehicle companies are reducing the production of high fuel-consuming cars and turning to lower fuel-consuming models and segmented markets. Also, some auto companies, either foreign or domestic ones, are speeding up the industrialization of new-energy cars. Under the circumstances, SAIC Motor shall increase its awareness of the urgency and the sense of crisis, and promote the further development of SAIC Motor's new-energy cars through concrete actions.

In order to accelerate the development of new-energy cars, SAIC Motor has set up a leader panel and a promotion team for the new-energy car project. The leader panel is responsible for implementing SAIC Motor's new-energy car strategy, the planning of the construction of the industry chain, and the formulation of relating measures. The promotion team is in charge of coordination and solving major problems that come up during the implementation of the new-energy car project, and pressing on the carrying out of the project.

Seize the opportunity and realize leap progress

Presently, the international financial crisis keeps spreading out. Major car companies all over the world are significantly affected. The survivals of the enterprises are faced with extraordinary challenges. Under such circumstances, one problem that has to be dealt with by domestic auto companies is how to enhance companies' capability for sustainable development.

At present, Adjustment and Vitalization Plans for the Auto Industry and Notice about Energy Saving and Demonstration & Promotion of New-Energy Cars from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Science Technology have been published. As it was, energy saving and new-energy cars in China are now in the middle of an unprecedented opportunity for development. SAIC Motor will grasp the opportunity tightly, accelerate structural adjustment, enhance innovation ability, promote the industrialization of new-energy cars, and achieve breakthrough for the development of new-energy automobiles.

In the meantime, SAIC Motor will hold firmly on this opportunity of servicing the 2010 EXPO to show China's new-energy cars to the world, and accelerate the development of SAIC Motor's new-energy cars through demonstrating them in the EXPO.

In terms of either the requirements of the trend of the industry's development, or the requirements of the development of SAIC Motor itself, the development of new-energy car is beneficial for SAIC Motor to achieve leapfrog development, maintain its leading position in China, and enhance its international competitiveness. For the smooth implementation of its new-energy car project, SAIC Motor will mobilize the whole strength of the company in such aspects as institution, personnel, and resources, so as to make sure the success of the project.
