King Long and Bus Stop Sales Launch New 9-Meter EVolution Midi Electric Bus for Australia
02 April 2026
As Australia's public transport system accelerates its shift to zero emissions, the market is demonstrating increasingly sophisticated demand for tailored vehicle specifications. Australian supplier Bus Stop Sales, in partnership with King Long, has unveiled the newly developed EVolution Midi—a 9-meter low-floor pure electric city bus. This launch not only expands the local new energy bus product portfolio but also challenges the mid-size bus market long dominated by standard 12-meter models.

For decades, 12-meter buses have served as the backbone of Australian urban fleets, their mature operational models deeply influencing procurement frameworks, deployment strategies, and even depot design. However, rising urban density, expanding new districts, and residential developments with compact road layouts and diverse passenger flow requirements are testing the reliance on a single vehicle type.
"The transition to zero-emission public transport in Australia is accelerating, but not all routes are suited to the same vehicle. That is the real challenge facing fleet management," said Pete White, Director of Bus Stop Sales. Data indicates that approximately 350 zero-emission buses and coaches were delivered across Australia in 2025, a significant increase from 208 units in 2024. Despite rapid technological progress, the strategic question of matching vehicle size to specific routes has rarely been explored in depth.

Responding to this market gap, the EVolution Midi was jointly developed by Bus Stop Sales and King Long as a purpose-built 9-meter low-floor electric city bus designed specifically for Australian operating conditions. Although technically a 9-meter model, White emphasized that it has been carefully engineered to navigate narrow inner-city streets and newer residential areas where road design does not prioritize bus access.

Notably, 9-meter buses are not new to Australia, having been widely deployed in school and tour coach applications. However, Bus Stop Sales is introducing this size into the urban transit segment for the first time with a fully accessible low-floor configuration—marking a shift from high-floor to low-entry design.
During development, Bus Stop Sales evaluated compact options of 6, 7, and 8 meters. While these offered greater maneuverability, they compromised passenger space, accessibility, and overall operational efficiency. More critically, as White noted: "Smaller vehicles do not materially reduce fixed operating costs such as driver wages, compliance checks, and maintenance investment, which limits their viability as long-term fleet solutions."
The design focus therefore shifted toward delivering narrow-street maneuverability while maintaining a mainstream passenger experience. The resulting EVolution Midi provides the required flexibility without sacrificing the space, layout, and accessibility features expected of a standard low-floor city bus.
In terms of core technical specifications, the EVolution Midi emphasizes full-life-cycle reliability. The vehicle is equipped with a 286 kWh CATL BC5 battery platform, which delivers robust support for demanding urban operations through its durability, thermal management performance, and comprehensive after-sales support network.
The two-door configuration offers 17 fixed seats plus two wheelchair bays. When not in use, the wheelchair areas can accommodate seven folding seats to enhance peak-hour operational efficiency. The cockpit layout, visibility, and control logic mirror those of full-size city buses, minimizing driver training costs and enabling flexible fleet scheduling across different models.
"The starting point was not size, but what actually works in real-world operations," explained Stephen Long, National Fleet Manager at Bus Stop Sales. "Once you recognize that driver costs and fleet management expenses remain largely consistent regardless of bus size, the solution must deliver accessibility, passenger comfort, and operational confidence without compromise."
Harvey Zheng, Regional Manager at King Long Australia, stated that the close collaboration aims to meet Australia's operational requirements and elevated service expectations—combining the maneuverability of smaller buses with the passenger experience, accessibility standards, and service levels of traditional 12-meter city buses.
Beyond the product itself, the launch reflects a broader transformation in Australia's bus industry. As major cities such as Melbourne expand toward outer suburbs, public transport networks face dual pressures of insufficient coverage and operational efficiency. The South Australian government recently announced the procurement of 60 pure electric buses as part of its planned zero-emission transport network.
As a key local supplier, Bus Stop Sales has established a flagship facility at its Rocklea headquarters in Queensland, featuring solar arrays, battery energy storage systems, and a zero-emission training center. The company has also accumulated extensive real-world electric bus operational experience through previous partnerships with institutions including Hillcrest Christian College on the Gold Coast.
Bus Stop Sales is now supporting the rollout of the EVolution Midi through its national after-sales, parts supply, and technical support network.
Pete White concluded that the EVolution Midi is not intended to redefine a category, but to address practical, long-standing challenges on many routes. "It delivers an Australian-designed solution based on local operational practices and evolving service needs."
