15 February 2026

It is reported that the local public transport company of Birkenfeld has officially put 20 BYD electric buses into operation, serving regional and urban public transport in the Nationalparklandkreis Birkenfeld.

The launch ceremony for the new fleet was held at the Exhibition Centre in Idar-Oberstein, with representatives from politics, transport authorities and operating companies in attendance.

Nationalparklandkreis Birkenfeld refers to the rural district of Birkenfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. Public bus services in the district are operated by the local public transport company of Birkenfeld, a county-owned enterprise that conducts business under the Rhein-Nahe Transport Association, the regional public transport authority.

The 20 fully electric buses put into operation this time feature the unified livery of the Rhein-Nahe Transport Association. They are expected to undertake approximately three-quarters of the total annual service of the local transport company, covering an annual mileage of around 1.5 million kilometres.

All vehicles are supplied by BYD and mainly deployed on urban bus routes in Idar-Oberstein.

According to Birkenfeld district authorities, the total investment in the project amounts to approximately €11 million, including around €10 million for vehicle procurement and €1 million for the construction of charging infrastructure.
