BYD Reaches 950 Electric Buses in Operation in Chile Public Transportation

13 January 2026

BYD Chile recently completed the delivery of a new batch of electric buses, including double-decker and articulated electric buses, bringing the total number of BYD zero-emission electric buses operating in Chile's public transportation system to 950.

BYD Chile, in collaboration with local operator Metbus, has officially completed the renewal of 950 100% pure electric buses in Santiago's public transportation system, Red Movilidad. This significant achievement further consolidates Santiago's position as a global benchmark for zero-emission public transportation.

This milestone was reached following the successful arrival and deployment of a new fleet of BYD electric buses. The fleet includes 94 articulated electric buses and 30 double-decker electric buses, primarily serving high-traffic core bus routes in the capital region. The information was officially announced at a joint event held by BYD and Metbus.

Event attendees included Chile's Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Muñoz, former Minister of Transport and current Director of the Metropolitan Public Transport Authority Paola Tapia, former Minister of Transport Gloria Hutt, BYD Chile Country Manager Tamara Berríos, and representatives from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP).

The event featured a symbolic "farewell ceremony" for a traditional diesel articulated bus, demonstrating the ongoing evolution of public transportation technology and the accelerated transition toward electrification and zero emissions, driven by BYD and operators.

Tamara Berríos, BYD Chile Country Manager, stated: "Completing the renewal of 950 pure electric buses with Metbus is a proud major achievement for BYD, and it fully reflects the results of collaborative efforts between the government, industry, and operators." She further noted that Chile has become a global case study of electrified public transportation, "Electrification is not a short-term technological trend, but a genuine tool for social transformation that can effectively improve citizens' quality of life and enhance urban sustainable development levels."

The introduction of articulated and double-decker electric buses reflects BYD's long-term strategic vision in public transportation—to carry more passengers with higher efficiency, lower operating costs, and zero emissions.

Since 2017, BYD electric buses operated by Metbus have accumulated over 230 million kilometers of travel, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 525,000 tons. This remarkable environmental achievement fully demonstrates the critical role public transportation can play in addressing climate change. Meanwhile, the electrification upgrade has comprehensively improved public transportation service levels, including air conditioning, more comfortable seating, better ergonomic design for drivers, and a quieter, more comfortable riding experience, contributing to the creation of a modern, dignified public transportation system.

The deployment of these new vehicles further demonstrates the firm commitment of all parties to jointly build a cleaner, more modern, and efficient public transportation system, providing strong support for improving air quality, reducing urban noise, and achieving long-term sustainable operations, while also delivering tangible social and environmental benefits to millions of users of the Red Movilidad system.
