Weichai Among First to Pass Pre-research for Global Hydrogen Engine Standard
19 November 2025
November 19, 2025 – Weichai Power has helped launch the world's first international standardization effort for hydrogen internal combustion engines, securing preliminary approval for a key technical standard during the ISO/TC 70 annual meetings.

The proposal for "Hydrogen fuel internal combustion engines – Identification and test methods for pre-ignition," jointly developed by Weichai Power and Beijing Institute of Technology, passed its Pre-Work Item initiation as one of the pioneering hydrogen engine standardization projects within the International Organization for Standardization's Internal Combustion Engines Committee.
"This milestone demonstrates our commitment to advancing hydrogen technology through global cooperation," said a Weichai Power representative. "Establishing unified testing protocols is crucial for industry-wide development."

The standard addresses critical technical challenges in hydrogen combustion management, particularly pre-ignition detection – a fundamental requirement for commercial deployment. The initiative positions Weichai at the forefront of shaping the future regulatory landscape for hydrogen propulsion systems.
Weichai's leadership in this emerging field extends beyond standardization. The company currently convenes ISO's Performance and Tests Working Group and has secured China's first national hydrogen engine research program. Its engines are already operating across multiple transportation sectors, reinforcing both domestic leadership and growing international competitiveness.
ISO/TC 70, established in 1949, develops international standards for internal combustion engine performance, testing and definitions.
