Zhongtong Right-Hand-Drive Double-Decker N12D "Europe Version"

07 November 2025

Driven by carbon-reduction goals and the pressing need to modernize urban transit, Zhongtong Bus launched the N12D battery-electric double-deck city bus in Singapore in 2024. Combining zero emissions, high capacity, smart features, and robust safety, the model is bringing new energy to public transport systems.

Shortly after its debut, Zhongtong introduced an all-new “Europe Version” of the N12D, tailored to the diverse demands of the European market. When this flagship model premiered at BusWorld, it quickly became a centerpiece of the exhibition. Its two decks break through conventional capacity limits, while a suite of technical innovations redefines the experience of riding an electric bus.

Exterior walk-around

Standing before its dimensions of 11,990 × 2,550 × 4,330 mm (wheelbase: 4,950 + 1,550 mm), the N12D commands a striking presence—hinting at the spacious interior within.

The front end continues Zhongtong’s N-series family identity: a dynamic V-shaped contour, a large black panel flowing smoothly into the lower windshield, and a chrome trim strip that runs through the brand emblem, visually widening the vehicle. Flanking the nose are four small “stars”—a signature N-series motif inspired by Peking Opera masks, blending Chinese aesthetic sensibility with global appeal.

Between the two decks, an oversized electronic destination display—equipped with a light sensor for optimal visibility in all conditions—ensures route information is legible from a distance. The upper-deck front section is raked backward to enhance aerodynamics and extend driving range.

Bionic design cues continue with “eagle-eye” headlamps and “wing-style” taillights, creating a unified, tech-forward look that remains distinctly Zhongtong. Cornering fog lamps activate automatically when the steering angle exceeds a preset threshold, boosting safety after dark.

Black trim along the side windows visually connects the upper and lower glazing, while a forward-swept slash at the front corner lends a sense of motion. The nearside features three doors (front dual inward-swing, center dual plug, rear single plug), all equipped with anti-pinch protection and warning lights.

Driver’s area

Entering through the front door brings you into the driver’s workspace. A 12.3-inch LCD smart instrument cluster, operating on a CAN-bus network, enables full electronic load control and diagnostics. Real-time energy consumption is displayed in color-coded bars—guiding drivers toward eco-friendly habits—while the adjustable instrument panel ensures an ideal view for any driver height.

The air-suspension seat includes a folding armrest, vacancy alert, and seatbelt reminder. Electronic mirrors, 360° intelligent surround-view monitoring, lane departure warning, cyclist collision warning, forward collision alert, and driver fatigue monitoring work together to significantly reduce accident risks.

Passenger compartment

Bright white finishes on walls and ceiling, paired with large windows and full-length skylight strips, create an airy and open ambiance. Strategically placed handrails ensure every standing passenger has easy access to support.

The N12D’s standout advantage is its capacity: 45 seats upstairs, 13 seats plus two wheelchair bays downstairs—accommodating up to 122 passengers in total. That’s about 50% more than a standard 12-meter single-deck bus, offering much-needed relief during peak hours.

Three doors and two staircases, along with a completely flat lower deck, enable swift boarding and alighting. A “one-to-eight” zonal air-conditioning system allows customized cooling to maintain comfort in every part of the bus.

Electric powertrain

The bus is powered by Zhongtong’s next-generation BC5 traction battery, with an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, delivering over 400 km of real-world urban range—enough for a full day’s service without midday charging. A 20–80% SOC supports 1C fast charging; twin DC ports can add 130 km in just 30 minutes. The sixth-generation energy management system eliminates range anxiety, while V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) capabilities offer operators flexible energy strategies.

A peak 450 kW direct-drive motor enables the N12D to tackle gradients of 20% or more, delivering maximum torque from a standstill—ideal for stop-start city operation. The aluminum housing keeps the unit lightweight and responsive.

Safety systems

With capacity for 122 passengers, safety is critical. A high-strength cage-body structure utilizes over 70% advanced high-strength steel. Automatic fire suppression systems are installed in the battery and high-voltage compartments, and brake calipers are fitted with high-temperature alerts. Together, these passive and active systems form a comprehensive safety net.

Conclusion

The N12D “Europe Version” is more than a showcase model—it is Zhongtong’s answer to the growing global demand for high-capacity, low-carbon, intelligent, and safe city buses. Wherever it operates, it is poised to become a key contributor to sustainable urban mobility.
