Shanghai to Roll out New Policies to Spur Sales of Green Vehicles

27 May 2009

Recently, Shanghai Economic & Information Technology Commission (SHEITC) solicited suggestions from the public and planned to offer a one-time subsidy amounting to 20% of the price tag of every new energy vehicle at the maximum to its buyer. Moreover, the new energy vehicles are going to enjoy toll waivers and more convenient registration process.

Due to their high price and maintenance fees, it is generally agreed that the new energy vehicles can hardly win the hearts of customers unless government offers strong financial supports to their buyers.

Shanghai Municipal Government has already showed their determination to speed up the commercialization of new energy vehicles by forming a fleet of over 1,000 new energy buses before 2010 World Expo. In addition, it will take every possible measure to ensure about 5% of the city’s newly produced vehicles are powered by new energy in 2011. To keep pace with the development of the new sector, it will also strengthen its efforts in building related infrastructure. In the next three years, about RMB 3 billion (about USD 439.307 million) is advised to be allocated as special funds to bolster up the commercialization of new energy vehicles.
