CATL Partners with Ellen MacArthur Foundation to Build Model Cities for Battery Circular Economy
21 March 2025
On March 18, 2025, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation announced a strategic partnership in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to jointly advance the development of the global battery circular economy.
As the first innovative new energy technology enterprise to join the Foundation’s strategic collaboration network, CATL launched the Global Energy Circular Initiative. The two parties will collaborate on systematic research into the battery circular economy, build a global ecosystem network, and share cutting-edge practices in battery recycling. They will also explore transformation pathways for the battery circular economy across different countries and regions, aiming to create model cities for circular battery economies. This marks the world's first circular economy public welfare initiative launched by a Chinese enterprise.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a leading global advocate for circular economy, is committed to promoting circular economy principles worldwide. It engages and inspires businesses, academic institutions, policymakers, research organizations, and other stakeholders to actively participate in circular economy transitions. By addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and other critical challenges, the Foundation seeks to establish an economic system that benefits both humanity and nature.
The launch of this battery circular economy project signifies the first-ever collaborative network in the new energy industry, integrating efforts across the entire industrial chain, government policymakers, and social organizations.
At this pivotal moment of global climate challenges, the battery industry—as the core carrier of energy transition and electrification—has emerged as a critical solution. Transforming the battery industry into a circular economy model presents immense economic and environmental opportunities.
"For CATL, the circular economy is not just a responsibility but also a driver of innovation. We have established a closed-loop ecosystem covering 'battery design - production - usage - cascade utilization - recycling and resource regeneration,'" said Song Dan, Head of Circular Economy Projects at CATL. "Every battery should serve as the starting point of energy circulation, not the endpoint, which requires collaborative innovation from global industrial partners."
Joe Murphy, Head of Partner Networks at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, stated, "The large-scale development of renewable energy and the electrification process have created historic opportunities for the circular economy in the battery sector. We are delighted to work with CATL to promote the global battery circular economy. CATL's participation will be a pivotal force in driving the realization of battery circularity and broader energy transitions."
From industrializing new energy to energizing industries, CATL upholds an open innovation philosophy. The company is committed to partnering with leading global organizations, institutions, and enterprises to accelerate technological innovation and application deployment in the battery circular economy. Through ecological synergy, CATL aims to shape a sustainable energy future together.
