CRRC Electric Vehicle Intelligent Driving System 3.0 Pre-research Initiated

12 March 2025

Since embarking on the research and development of intelligent connected vehicle technology, CRRC Electric Vehicle has consistently maintained a dual-wheel drive approach, focusing on both technological iteration and scenario-based implementation.

From the public road test of the world's first 12-meter L3 autonomous driving bus to the operation of new L4 autonomous driving minibuses in Chengdu, Chongqing, Yibin, Shanghai, and other cities, CRRC Electric Vehicle's intelligent technology level has continued to rise, with an expanding range of operational scenarios. This dual-track layout and development have facilitated the company's transformation and upgrading.

Technologically, CRRC Electric Vehicle has achieved dual breakthroughs in perception and decision-making. As the two key core technologies of autonomous driving, perception and decision-making have always been the focus of CRRC Electric Vehicle's efforts. After more than five years of continuous operational testing and repeated verification, CRRC Electric Vehicle's autonomous driving perception capabilities have significantly improved, with an increased range of obstacle recognition and enhanced recognition accuracy. For example, the accuracy of traffic light recognition has been increased to 98%, enabling vehicles to identify traffic signals, pedestrians, and obstacles in advance, and optimize braking distances through control algorithm adjustments. By supplementing pneumatic braking with electric braking, the issue of sudden braking has been completely resolved.

In terms of decision-making, through repeated "training" in various scenarios, vehicles have been equipped with "flexible decision-making" capabilities. When faced with unexpected situations such as occupied platforms, they can autonomously select safe stopping points, transforming mechanical execution into intelligent adaptation.

In terms of scenarios, CRRC Electric Vehicle has constructed a dual-layer scenario matrix of "mainline public transport + industrial parks" through the parallel development of L3 and L4 technologies. The 12-meter L3 "intelligent driving" buses focus on open scenarios such as BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) mainlines, meeting the demand for large transport capacity while achieving a balance between efficiency and safety through limited autonomous driving. L4 autonomous driving minibuses, on the other hand, delve into semi-closed scenarios such as industrial parks, park attractions, schools, and airports, satisfying high-frequency short-distance travel demands with advanced autonomous driving. This strategy of "passenger capacity grading + scenario openness adaptation" allows autonomous driving tools of different technical levels to leverage their respective strengths.

Driven by this dual-wheel approach, CRRC Electric Vehicle has also simultaneously developed unmanned products for various fields such as sanitation and logistics. In 2023, CRRC Electric Vehicle delivered and commissioned multiple intelligent products in Yibin, including autonomous driving minibuses, autonomous security vehicles, sweeping vehicles, and an intelligent scheduling platform, thereby establishing an intelligent transportation system within the park and facilitating CRRC Electric Vehicle's transformation from a single vehicle manufacturer to a smart transportation solution provider.

Comprehensive scenario layout and technological upgrades drive the digital transformation of transportation. Driven by the "AI+" wave, the transportation industry is undergoing profound changes. With a forward-looking strategic vision, CRRC Electric Vehicle has formulated a systematic and long-term strategic plan.

At the technological level, CRRC Electric Vehicle focuses on optimizing and upgrading the existing intelligent driving system 2.0, tackling technical challenges in demonstration operations, and taking the lead in achieving normalized operation of intelligent driving buses. Based on this foundation, the pre-research work for the intelligent driving system 3.0 has been initiated.

In terms of scenario expansion, CRRC Electric Vehicle will collaborate with upstream and downstream partners in the industry chain to construct a three-dimensional unmanned scenario matrix encompassing "public transport + sanitation + logistics". In the future, relying on the intelligent driving system 3.0 and leveraging comprehensively advanced technologies, CRRC Electric Vehicle will lay a solid foundation for building a comprehensive smart transportation system.

Furthermore, CRRC Electric Vehicle plans to initiate the "Cloud Intelligence Platform 3.0" development project, integrating key aspects of the entire vehicle lifecycle, including design and R&D, manufacturing, operation and maintenance, marketing, and after-sales, to create a comprehensive solution covering the entire lifecycle of the vehicle.
