How Dongfeng Cummins B6.2 & D6.7N Engines Achieve Both Power and Environmental Protection

22 October 2024

2024 marks a crucial year for the global acceleration of green and low-carbon transformation. The 23rd China International Internal Combustion Engine and Power Equipment Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as the "Engine Expo") grandly opened in Beijing, gathering the top wisdom of the global internal combustion engine industry and reflecting the profound changes in the industry under stricter environmental regulations and the impact of new energy technologies.

In the face of the global consensus on "carbon neutrality" and "carbon peaking" goals, the internal combustion engine industry is actively exploring efficient, clean, and intelligent development paths, striving to maintain dynamic performance while significantly reducing emissions and energy consumption. During the Engine Expo, Dongfeng Cummins unveiled its flagship products for the commercial and passenger vehicle sectors, the B6.2 and D6.7N engines, setting new technical benchmarks in the field of commercial vehicle power.

With the acceleration of urbanization, light commercial vehicles, as important carriers for urban logistics and public transportation, have increasingly attracted attention to the energy efficiency and environmental performance of their power systems. Currently, the light commercial vehicle market is undergoing a transition from traditional fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles. However, due to multiple factors such as the deployment of charging facilities and range limitations, internal combustion engines will remain an indispensable power source in this field for some time. Therefore, how to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions while maintaining power performance has become a core topic in the research and development of light commercial vehicle engines.

"The Dongfeng Cummins B6.2 engine, with its excellent performance and multiple advanced technologies, is redefining the power standards for light commercial vehicles," said Guo Hongwei, the head of the Automotive Engine Department at Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., in an interview with the Bus Network. The B6.2 engine not only achieves higher combustion efficiency and reduces fuel consumption but also complies with the latest China VI emission standards, contributing to the improvement of urban air quality. Especially in the passenger vehicle sector, the B6.2 engine, with its outstanding reliability and economy, has won the favor of domestic mainstream passenger vehicle OEMs such as Yutong and Kinglong, and has been installed in vehicles in batches, providing passengers with a more comfortable and environmentally friendly travel experience.

According to the report, light commercial vehicles equipped with the B6.2 engine have an average fuel consumption of 3-4L per 100 kilometers lower than competing products under comprehensive working conditions. For an annual travel distance of 100,000 kilometers, this can save vehicle owners tens of thousands of yuan in fuel costs each year. Additionally, the engine has a longer maintenance cycle, reducing downtime and maintenance costs, further improving the overall operational efficiency of the vehicle.

For passenger vehicle applications, Dongfeng Cummins has made special optimizations to the B6.2 engine based on the different characteristics of urban public transportation and intercity applications. For example, to address the frequent start-stop and variable frequency conditions of urban buses, they have reduced the engine's idle speed and adopted advanced technologies such as water-cooled superchargers to adapt to these variable working conditions. These optimization measures have made the B6.2 engine perform exceptionally well in the passenger vehicle sector, becoming the preferred choice for many passenger vehicle manufacturers and end-users.

D6.7N Engine: Efficient and Intelligent, Leading the Power Upgrade for Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Technological innovation never stops. Just when the B6.2 engine has achieved significant success in the light commercial vehicle sector, the D6.7N engine, with its more advanced features and performance, has quietly stepped into the center of the stage in the heavy commercial vehicle sector, forming a complementary product line and application scenario with the B6.2 engine.

Heavy commercial vehicles, as the mainstay of logistics, have their power system performance directly impacting transportation efficiency and costs. With the development of the logistics industry, the market has higher requirements for heavy commercial vehicles, which need to meet the demands of long-distance high-speed and short-distance heavy-load transportation, while also complying with strict environmental regulations. Engines need to maintain strong power, achieve high efficiency and low emissions, and respond to the call for green logistics.

Against this backdrop, the Dongfeng Cummins D6.7N gas engine, specifically designed for heavy commercial vehicles, has emerged. It integrates numerous cutting-edge technologies such as intelligent control, efficient combustion technology, and lightweight design. The D6.7N engine has a maximum power output of 280 horsepower (ps) and a peak torque of 1100N·m.

Guo Hongwei pointed out, "The D6.7N engine is undoubtedly a brilliant crystallization of the Dongfeng Cummins team's years of technical accumulation and innovative practice. Its significant improvement in dynamic performance has won wide market recognition. But what is more commendable is the new benchmark set by the D6.7N engine in energy efficiency and environmental protection, which is the embodiment of our team's unremitting pursuit."

To further enhance the engine's gas utilization efficiency, the D6.7N adopts an advanced combustion control system. This system, while ensuring the engine's strong power, significantly optimizes gas utilization efficiency through precise control of the combustion process. This undoubtedly brings more economical operating costs to users and further enhances their market competitiveness.

Furthermore, the D6.7N engine incorporates intelligent technology, equipped with remote monitoring and fault diagnosis functions. This feature allows users to monitor the engine's operating status anytime and anywhere, promptly detect and address potential faults, thereby significantly improving the vehicle's maintenance efficiency and safety. For heavy commercial vehicle users, this undoubtedly brings them a more convenient and efficient operational experience, further enhancing their satisfaction and loyalty.

Represented by the B6.2 and D6.7N products, in the era of balancing green transformation and technological innovation, Dongfeng Cummins has demonstrated its profound foundation in the commercial vehicle power sector and has promoted the sustainable development of the industry through practical actions. More efficient, cleaner, and smarter—this is the inevitable path for the development of the internal combustion engine industry. Dongfeng Cummins will continue to drive the commercial vehicle power industry towards a greener future with technological innovation as its driving force.
