Mercedes-Benz Delivers 147 City Buses Equipped with Allison Transmissions to Uruguay
04 June 2020
The Uruguayan company has been working with Allison transmissions since 2010 when it received its first rear-engine OH 1518 XBC. The positive outcome of this first experience evolved to the purchase of the rear-engine OH 1622 L buses. These received not only the fully automatic transmission, but also the air suspension to further the passengers’ comfort.
To better serve its users and reduce maintenance costs, CUTCSA’s next step forward is to acquire low-floor architecture buses for the first time. Low-floor buses facilitate better access to its interior, especially for those who are physically challenged.
The arrival of the low-floor OH 1721 buses with the fully automatic Allison transmissions with retarders leads CUTCSA to a new level in terms of fleet modernity and comfort for passengers. The new buses also received Euro 5 Mercedes-Benz engines, which stand out for their environmentally friendly low emissions of residues and NOx (nitrogen oxides).
“Torqmatic-styled transmissions, such as the T 270Rs fitting the OH 1721s Mercedes Benz buses exported to Uruguay, are particularly developed for passenger transport vehicles,” said Evaldo Oliveira, Allison Transmission's Director of Sales for South America.
“Its internal architecture combines the performance of the torque converter with state-of-the-art adaptive controls, reducing bumps in the bus powertrain and providing faster acceleration and lower fuel consumption for the fleet,” said Oliveira. “In addition, Allison Automatics have a constant electronic monitoring system allowing greater convenience in checking the lubricating oil level, simplifying maintenance and avoiding unnecessary downtime.”
