China-made Autos Set High Sales

15 April 2009

SALES of domestically-produced motor vehicles in China set a new record of 1.11 million units in March, a rise of 5 percent from a year earlier, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said yesterday.

It is the third straight month that China's auto sales beat the United States.

According to Autodata Corp statistics, US new vehicle sales tumbled 36.8 percent to 857,735 in March from the same month last year.

China's March auto sales jumped 34 percent from February, when sales rose 24.7 percent year on year to 827,600 units.

Sales of commercial vehicles - buses, trucks and pick-ups - surged 53.2 percent month on month to 337,400, but fell 5.3 percent from a year earlier.

Passenger car sales - sedans, SUVs and MPVs - climbed 27.2 percent month on month and 10.3 percent annually to 772,400 last month.

Auto makers produced 1.1 million vehicles last month, up 5.55 percent year on year, according to CAAM.

First-quarter sales totaled 2.68 million units, up 3.88 percent, and production was 2.57 million, up 1.91 percent.

CAAM said sales were buoyed by stimulus policies. In January, China halved the purchase tax on passenger cars with engine capacities of less than 1.6 liters to 5 percent. Sales of these cars rose 21.9 percent to 1.41 million in the first quarter.
