Yutong Sets Up A Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Research Center

04 January 2018

Recently, Zhengzhou Yutong Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Research Center officially won the approval from Zhengzhou municipal government, providing new impetus for the continued growth of fuel cell bus industry.

On the back of Zhengzhou Engineering & Technological Research Center, Zhengzhou Yutong Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Center will pool all the best resources and develop fuel cells with improved reliability and higher adaptability. In the meantime, it will strengthen its effort in developing hydrogen refilling technologies and hydrogen storage technologies, establishing fuel cell assessment & evaluation systems.

1) Yutong has made several technological breakthroughs in fuel cell bus industry

In 2009, Yutong officially launched its fuel cell bus delopment project. In 2012, it established its own Fuel Cell Bus R&D Team. In recent years, Yutong has made huge investments in the fuel cell bus development center and in return has made impressive achievements in this emerging area. In 2014, it successfully won the approval of manufacturing fuel cell buses. In 2015, it rolled out China’s first fuel cell bus. In 2017, it gained the certificate for installing hydrogen systems on vehicles.

Currently, Yutong boasts a Fuel Cell Bus R&D Team consisting of 45 employeeswith six holding doctoror’s degree and 26 master’s degree. In such key areas as system integration, control technologies, hydrogen systems on vehicles, fast hydrogen refilling technologies, fuel cell assessment & evaluation technologies, it has made a number of breakthroughs.

Yutong Sets Up A Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Research Center

Covering an area of over 10,000 square meters, Zhengzhou Yutong Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Research Center will build a platform for fuel cell assessment and evaluation, which is set to providing comprehensive testing and evaluating services for fuel cell vehicles.

So far, Yutong has successfully rolled out its third generation fuel cell buses. Its fourth generation fuel cell buses, now under construction, will soon hit the market for urban public transport and passenger transport.

2) Yutong speeds up the commercialization of fuel cell buses

Undoubtedly, hydrogen has long been considered as the ultimate solution for the diminishing fossil fuels on this planet. Fuel cell buses represent the inevitable trend for the global bus manufacturing industry. The establishment of Zhengzhou Yutong Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Engineering Center will greatly strengthen the overall competitiveness of Yutong, better relocate the resources within the industry and promote the commercialization of fuel cell bus technonologies.

So far, Yutong has successfully accomplished several rounds of trial operations of its third generation fuel cell buses with an accumulated mileage of over 35,000 kilometers.

In September, 2017, Yutong won the bid for UN’s third phase project, ushering a new era of the commercialization of its fuel cell buses. From 2018 to 2019, over 100 units Yutong fuel cell buses are scheduled to hit the road in Zhengzhou, laying a solid foundation for its nationwide commercialization.

To meet the growing demand for fuel cell buses, Yutong has aso sped up its pace in building hydrogen refilling infrastructure in Zhengzhou. In 2015, the construction of its first hydrogen refilling station with a daily refilling capacity of 200 kilograms of hydrogen was completed.

According to China’s Thirteenth Five-Year National Strategic Industry Development Plan, an unprecedented emphasis is given to fuel cell bus development and the development of related sectors. As a pioneer in this promising sector, Yutong has been sparing no efforts to push China’s fuel cell bus development to another new historical height in the global market.(www.chinabuses.org)
